At last week’s meeting we discussed doing some campaigning on climate change and environmental issues in general.
Ideas for discussion include:
- a campaign in favour of school buses for all students and improved transport on university campuses.
- the question of how we promote a green lifestyle and sustainable choices
- our attitude to the recent energy review
Any thoughts and ideas on this would be appreciated.

We should also do something on cycling to school. The education bill has a requirement on local authorities to develop sustainable transport plans for schools, so maybe that might be worth investigating. I think there are probably regulations that will be published by the education department on it. The DfES sustainable schools webpage is here:

Something that’s come up recently is the pollution caused through the transportation of foodstuffs and other goods around the world. This brings up the fair trade v environmnet debate: If we are encouraged to buy fair trade goods, therefore helping local communities, do we not, in turn, contribute towards climate change in the increase in the air miles needed to transport goods? This brings up two issues that most young people feel passionately about; climate change and fair trade. Is this topic too wide to manage? It’s an interesting dichotomy.

I went on the last national climate change demo. It was very worthwhile. Particuarly if you like Michael Meacher!
